Japan's shipping group mulls more Vietnam investment

Japan’s largest shipping group NYK plans to pour at least US$220 million into Vietnam, the group’s leader said during a visit to the Southeast Asian country last week.
President Koji Miyahara told the Lao Dong newspaper last Friday that he had worked with the Vietnamese ministries of investment and transports on future investment plans.

Operating in Vietnam for 10 years, NYK was the first company to open a route from Japan to Cai Lan Port in northern Vietnam for coal and wood shipping in 2004.

Miyahama said NYK had signed a $20 million contract to build two 9,000-ton ships in Vietnam and planned to invest an additional $50 million for more Vietnamese-made vessels.

It had also made long-term plans to invest in Thi Vai port in Ho Chi Minh City, road transport, warehouse and oil tanker-building, he added.

President Miyahara also expressed his interest in Vietnam's human resources, adding that NYK planned to train 500 Vietnamese in its Philippines and Singapore training centers.

NYK and Vietnam can cooperate in training sailors for major marine transportation groups, Miyahara stressed.
